A Cut Above - Rye Brook salon helps Westchester fight cancer

This past Sunday, GeMargot Salon in Rye Brook opened its doors for its second-annual Cut-a-Thon. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., proceeds from any service from hair styling to blow-drying to nail care went to Gilda's Club Westchester, the local affiliate of a leading cancer support organization. By the end of the day, this year's Cut-a- Thon raised $3,000 to benefit people in Westchester affected by this devastating disease.

The 263 South Ridge St. salon is usually closed on Sunday, but this didn't stop its stylists and assistants from dedicating themselves to serving 45 customers that day and helping the community at large. Employees also took it upon themselves to donate their tips for the day.

"We just felt that we wanted to give back to the community for all of their support for us," said shop co-owner Judy Girardi of Rye Brook. "We see a lot of clientele in this business. We see people come and go, and we also see a lot of people pass away from cancer. And Gilda's Club is one of the best cancer support groups around."

For Girardi and the salon's two other owners-George Goodhart and Lucille Markisz, both of Port Chester-the effort to raise money to support those living with or affected by cancer was a personal one they hope to continue for years to come.

"All of our families have been touched by cancer," said Goodhart, hardly hesitating while giving Janice Baio of Harrison a quick trim. "This is a great way to make a difference."

The partnership between Ge- Margot Salon and the renowned support group began last year through collaboration between the salon's three co-owners and longtime customer Susie Wang of Rye Brook, who co-founded Gilda's Club Westchester.

"They're all very compassionate here, and they watched me go through my own cancer diagnosis 22 years ago," said Wang, taking a moment to chat in the middle of her manicure. "They do well by doing good, and we're very fortunate that they are partnering with us." Wang and co-founder Robin Poses Markell opened the Westchester affiliate of Gilda's Club-located at 80 Maple Ave. in White Plains- in 2001 after noticing that there were not many organizations in Westchester benefiting cancer victims and their families.

Gilda's Club was founded in 1991 to honor comedian Gilda Radner, best known for her fiveyear stint on "Saturday Night Live" from 1975 to 1980. Radner died after a hard-fought battle with ovarian cancer in 1989, inspiring her closest friends and family- including husband Gene Wilder and psychotherapist Joanna Bull- to found a support group for the cancer-stricken following their diagnosis. The first club opened its doors in New York City in 1995 and since then, it has expanded to include 19 local affiliates throughout the United States and Canada with eight more currently in development.

While the funds raised during Sunday's Cut-a-Thon fell short of last year's lofty sum of $5,000, GeMargot's fight against cancer is far from over. The owners look forward to raising both money and awareness through future events.

"We're hoping to go the distance," said Markisz. "Anything we can do to help calm the chaos of cancer is worth it."

This unrelenting spirit of charity is echoed by many of the salon's most dedicated customers such as Johanna Kmetz of Rye Brook, who proved that while hairstyles may change, caring is always in season.

"This cause means a lot to me," said Kmetz. "It's my honor and my pleasure to do everything I can to help those living with this illness."
